This has been a trying week as Strep has swept through our home.  As I lay on the couch holding my soon to be 6 year old {in 3 days} she snuggled up beside me just basking in the moment.  With a high fever and chills, she looked up at me with a smile on her face and said, “I LOVE YOU MOMMY.  I LOVE YOU SO MUCH I CAN’T STAND IT!”

It occurred to me in that moment that she LOVES UNCONDITIONALLY because she herself feels UNCONDITIONALLY LOVED!  She feels so at peace in her identity because she is loved, and feels safe and secure.  It made me think of Paul and his statement that true and pure religion is loving the widows and the orphans.  While it can be interpreted literally I began to contemplate what it really meant.

What do the widows and orphans of our world represent?  Are they not the ones who are struggling with their deepest identities?  They feel isolated, neither loved, safe or secure.  As I was thinking about this I couldn’t help but gasp when on The View, Bill O’Rielly was being interviewed.  I had been watching it because our friends from our college days, The Duck Dynasty guys were being interviewed.  {How crazy is that!!}

So Bill says 10% of our country’s population is just inherently evil and should be put away for good, no second chances ever.  It flew all over me.  That is all fine and good until it is someone he loves who finds himself struggling with some heinous addiction.  If it is his son, I believe he would be hoping for some grace, hope, recovery and rehabilitation.  Anyone who has studied even the smallest amount of psychology understands that our prisons and our society are filled with people who have lost their way, they have lost their identity or it has been lost to them.  Look deeper into a criminal’s past and you will usually find an abandonment which left them confused and reactive.

I agree that society must protect the innocent and thankfully so, but to pretend that even the least of these are not fearfully and wonderfully made is a gross injustice of the Creator God I know.  When Paul said that the PUREST form of religion was to love these “widows and orphans” I believe it is a clue into the way God loves and compels us to love.

The great Teacher himself hung out with the socially rejected and found the good in them.  He saw greatness in the lowest of humanity.  I strive to do the same.  Like Pollyanna, “When we look for the good in them, we find it.”  I feel sorry for Bill.  The level of love he gives to the 10% may just be the level of love he feels deep down for himself.  When we understand how much we are loved unconditionally by our maker, we are freed up to love others in the same way!

Identity changes everything.  Show the world they are loved and you might just find the Kingdom of Heaven on earth.  After all, it was said to be at hand 2000 years ago!
